Abstract:
The paper looks into the relation and regional variation of marital relationship and childhood death using NFHS III data. It is evident that younger women aged between 15-30 years are experiencing some degree
of marital control irrespective of their regional location. In the more egalitarian society of Tamil Nadu, the level of violence is rampant, though it shows high level of autonomy and less marital control. It is worth mentioning that early childhood death is an important factor in some of the northern states to determine
marital relation. Both the components i.e. early childhood death and violence does have a determining effect on each other.
