Abstract: The article presents a study investigating the total fertility rate's indirect measurements of in India. It provides information on the use of regression line technique where a concept on the relationship between total fertility rate and birth order statistics is established. A brief description of the sources of data provided by the National Family Health Survey (NFHS) and Sample Registration System (SRS) is also indicated. The article states the importance of birth order analysis in understanding the trends and differentials in fertility as well as its indirect implications to population growth.
