Abstract:
In the present paper, an attempt has been made to examine the social inequality in health and treatment seeking behaviour in the two states of India. Madhya Pradesh (MP) and Andhra Pradesh (AP) exploring the data from National Family Health Survey (NFHS 2), India, 1998-99. Bi-variate and multivariate analyses (logistic regression) have been used to study the social inequality among the various subgroups of the population with respect to their health and morbidity conditions. The finding suggests that the access to basic material necessities for better health conditions such as safe drinking water and proper sanitary conditions, are highly and significantly linked with inequalities among the various socio-economic groups (caste, religion, age, education, type of house and standard of living of the household) in both the states. The health situation was examined with respect to the prevalence of asthma, tuberculosis, malaria and jaundice according to different sociocultural sub-groups of the population. Differentials were found to be wide by age groups, educational attainment, caste and standard of living, and residence for all the four diseases in both the states. |
