CALL FOR APPLICATIONS
The Demographic and Health Survey (DHS) Program is seeking participants for a 5-day data analysis residential workshop to be held in Pokhara, Nepal from August 14-18, 2023.
 
The workshop will teach participant teams to conduct statistical analyses using datasets from the 2022 Nepal DHS (NDHS).  The statistical software Stata SE 18 will be provided for use during the workshop. The workshop will include training on NDHS sampling and weighting, recoding variables, merging datasets, creating tabulation plans, regression and significance testing, interpretation of results, and other topics.
 
A particular focus of the workshop will be on indicator trends: methods to assess whether changes over time are statistically significant and decomposition techniques to identify the rate and composition components of change over time.  During the workshop, participants teams will apply this training to selected NDHS indicators in family planning/reproductive health, nutrition, maternal and child health, menstrual health, gender, violence, or other health topics measured in NDHS surveys.
 
Eligibility
Participants must be familiar with the public health context in Nepal.  Applications from analysts with research organizations, the Ministry of Health and Population, National Statistics Office, local research organizations, university faculty, or program implementers are encouraged, but should not include individuals from donor agencies. Participants from previous DHS data analysis or Fellows training workshops are not eligible to apply and participants selected for this workshop will be ineligible to participate as a trainee in future DHS further analysis or Fellows training workshops. However, participants from previous SPA, MIS, or GIS workshops may apply. 
Interested applicants must meet the following criteria:
  • Currently living and working in Nepa
  • Have a degree in public health, demography, statistics, or related subject and relevant work experience. 
  • Have a laptop computer that meets the technical and space requirements to install Stata SE that can be used throughout the workshop 
  • Be available to attend every day of the workshop
Applications should be submitted by July 21, 2023. Applications consist of the following four items:
  • A brief description of applicant’s current job and research role, including any prior use of DHS data.
  • Areas of research interest 
  • Self-rated proficiency in Stata (or other statistical software), and
  • A curriculum vitae with a list of publications and complete contact information
Workshop Costs and Participation
This is a residential workshop.  The USAID-funded DHS Program will cover travel, hotel, per diem, and local transport costs to the workshop venue for all selected participants. Applicants who are accepted for the workshop must submit a letter from their employer approving their availability to attend every day of the workshop.
