This further analysis focuses on: trends in various dimensions of family planning since 2001 and 2006, on the unmet need for family planning that had been emphasized in a Further Analysis report based largely on the 2006 survey (Soumaila et al. 2009), and on multivariate analyses of characteristics associated with family planning. The analysis of trends throughout this report is complicated by the sampling problems in the most recent survey which, for reasons of security, excluded the three northern regions of Gao, Kidal and Timbuktu and did not fully represent the region of Mopti. Comparability over time therefore requires excluding these regions in the total sample estimates. This exclusion is noted as the “adjusted” totals. In the 2006 survey, the three northern regions comprised 10 percent of the total sample of women and Mopti was 14 percent. In regional trend analyses, Mopti is included but not in the adjusted totals.
